Do you need help with Backpain

Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic treats back pain and a whole variety of musculoskeletal problems. This is done by assessing the whole patient with particular interest in the alignment of the spine and pelvis and the bodies nervous system.

“Getting you on the road to recovery without the use of drugs”

What is Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that is concerned with the alignment of the spine and the effect that this alignment has on your bodies nervous system. The nervous system is important because it controls all the functions of your body including muscle function and your feelings of pain.

One of the best things about chiropractic is that we help get you on the road to recovery without the use of drugs or surgery. For many problems with the nervous system, joints, bones and muscles, treatment without the use of drugs or surgery is the most appropriate and risk free method. Our methods are all evidence-based, natural and are based on years of chiropractic training and experience.

Chiropractic can help with…

  • Back pain
  • Neck and Shoulder Pain
  • Rib, pelvis, hip and knee problems
  • Recovery from accidents, whiplash or sports injuries
  • Headaches, dizziness or vertigo
  • Foot and hand problems

Dr Eoin Roe DC MChiro

Eoin first discovered the benefits of chiropractic when at 21yrs he sustained a back injury playing rugby that left him in bed for 3 months. During that time his leg muscles wasted and he needed valium to help him cope with the pain of a prolapsed disc. His doctor recommended back surgery. Thankfully his mother an occupational therapist brought him to a chiropractor whose interventions got him back on his feet and mobile without the need for surgery or drugs.

After working in a number of different industries Eoin returned to college as a mature student and received a Masters in chiropractic from BPP University in the UK. Eoin is a Doctor of chiropractic from McTimoney College of Chiropractic and has further training in Chiropractic diversified adjusting and the Gonstead technique and is a certified practitioner for SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment) and FMS (functional movement screening. He has been running chiropractic clinics in Kinsale and Douglas since 2013 taking over from Dr Leon Taylor DC. In 2016 he opened Market Street Clinic in Skibbereen with his wife Amanda a Clinical Hypnotherapist.

Eoin is a coach for Skibbereen youth rugby, a passionate sailor, barefoot running enthusiast and has practiced yoga and chi gong for over 20 years.

The Importance of Movement

You often hear the maxim “just keep moving” and as a general rule this is correct we all want to be able to keep doing the things we enjoy – whether that is walking, dancing, running or playing sport, and it affects us on many levels if we are unable to do them.

I believe that one of the main reasons we end up with musculoskeletal problems is that due to a modern lifestyle we have lost the ability move as well as we could. The resulting imbalance that this causes in the body can cause a host of problems that chiropractic can help with .

Whilst you may not be able to and should not exercise when you are in pain, exercise and correcting your movement are essential for your health and to keep you out of pain.

Functional Movement Screening (FMS)

“A functional movement assessment will identify functional limitations and asymmetries”

In addition to chiropractic care I offer FMS screening, which assess’ problems with movement patterns. This has a lot of benefit for sports teams and individuals but can be also used for the general population who want to improve their movement.

There is a progression of baseline functional movements and developmental movement patterns, which are key to your motor control, flexibility and strength.

Functional limitations appear if these movements have not been learned or are altered due to injury.

Functional limitations and asymmetries can impede athletic performance or slow your recover time after an injury.

A functional movement assessment will identify functional limitations and asymmetries. A methodical corrective exercise strategy will help you improve your functional movement, motor control, flexibility and strength.

By ensuring that your musculoskeletal is working as it should, your bodies innate intelligence will enable you to perform at your best.

Making these improvements prior to advancing your performance training increases performance and reduces the risk of injury.

Movement assessment of children

Assessment of children and teenagers developmental and functional movement patterns during sport ie. skipping hopping throwing etc. shows that mobility corresponds to growth periods and not to their age.

Coaches and parents can support their child’s future performance by encouraging all round athletic ability rather than specialising too soon. With the increase in use of technology and the knock on effect of sitting too much it is important to assess childrens ability to move properly and for them to develop the necessary movement skills.

The development of movement as a child is important for all aspects of cognitive behaviour – moving is how the child starts to learn about its environment and is the foundation for all learning

When will you schedule my the next appointment

For new patients you will be scheduled for a follow up treatment in 1 week this is to assess how the treatment has gone whether anything else needs to be done and to see how you have reacted to the treatment. If you are an existing patient I will usually ask you to return if and when needed.

How many follow up sessions do I need

Each Clients circumstances are unique and this will depend on your diagnosis, treatment given and how you respond. On average clients experience significant pain relief after the first session and satisfactory improvement in functional movement by the 4th session. However your age, type of condition and how long you have had the condition may affect your speed of recovery.

What should I do during the recovery period

I encourage clients to be proactive during the recovery period. Some lifestyle changes may be recommended, and I encourage clients to take responsibility for their continued recovery at home. Before leaving I will make personalised recommendations for you so you can feel confident that you know how to care for and strengthen the effected area at home.

What can I do to reduce the number of follow up visits

Following your home care plan will reduce the number of follow up sessions and speed up your recovery time.

Do you recommend X-rays

Generally I believe that X-rays are not necessary, as they bring their own health risks and additional costs. Only on very rare occassions will your specific presentation require us to request X-rays or more likely an MRI, either to rule out more serious conditions or to assist us in assessing the most effective treatment plan for you. If necessary, I can refer you to your GP or arrange an MRI directly with Affidea in Cork.

Do you read MRI’s or X-ray’s

If you have X-rays or MRI report please bring them with you. I can read xrays but the report that accompanies an xray or an MRI is more useful.

Can you help with Headaches

Yes chiropractic can help headaches. There is a form of headache called cervicogenic headache meaning from the neck which we are very successful in helping with. We may also be able to help with migraine and tension headaches.

What other conditions can you help with

Chiropractic can also help you overcome… Back pain Neck and shoulder pain Rib, pelvis, hip, and knee problems Recovery from accidents, whiplash or sports injuries Headaches, dizziness or vertigo Foot & hand problems

Do you promote Orthotic insoles

Most common foot problems are a direct result of wearing modern shoes that have… • overly cushioned soles • narrow toe box (including trainers) • lack of sensory feedback from the floor. Whilst orthotics may initially remove foot pain. (similar to the relief you experience when a broken arm is put in a cast). It is when the supports are removed and the muscles are rebuilt that true healing occurs. As a professional sailor I lived approx 90% of the time barefoot for almost 10years. When I became shore based my feet struggled adapting to shoes and I experienced debilitating foot pain for almost 3 years. During that time I discovered the relief that orthotics gave my feet. But this lasted only whilst I wore them and did not treat the underlying problem. Fortunately for me Leon Taylor (who many of you know) recommended Born to Run by Christopher McDougall. Adapting a barefoot philosophy has helped me to improve the flexibility and strengthen the muscles of my feet. So I became quickly and permanently pain free

What are the benefits of wearing barefoot footwear

I promote a barefoot philosophy in order to permanently free your feet of pain and improve flexibility and strengthen the muscles of the foot. The human foot has all the technology you need to have strong healthy feet. Barefoot companies such as VIVOBAREFOOT have fashionable and functional shoes that let you live, move, and play as if you were barefoot, all day, everyday. Visit their website for more details NB* I do not receive a financial gain for recommending this company.

What are the benefits of a barefoot lifestyle

If you want to learn more about how you can benefit from a barefoot lifestyle I can recommend this free step-by-step ebook by Lee Saxby’s – Proprioception: Making Sense of Barefoot Running
